Columbus Prepares to Pass Gun Control Laws

Dear Friend,

We've been reporting on the situation in Columbus, OH, with Mayor Ginther and City Council making moves to pass gun control ordinances despite the fact that Ohio law forbids it with "preemption" law.

You can read the draft legislation here. And here is an article that provides a quick history of preemption and a summary of what Columbus is doing.

You can also listen to our podcast on this issue here.

Columbus leaders are making the argument that despite Ohio's preemption law and despite a judge's "stay" order in their lawsuit against the state, they have the right to pass certain gun control laws.

After witnessing the public hearing on this last week, it appears they believe there's a "loophole" in the law, and based on that, they plan to pass a ban on magazines with 30 or more rounds, enact a storage mandate, and outlaw "straw man" purchases, something that is already illegal.

We believe the loophole argument is wrong and entirely disingenuous, and that Columbus would lose in court over this matter.

However, be advised that if you live within the city limits of Columbus, it is highly likely that City Council will take a vote within the next couple of weeks. And since they are seeking to declare an "emergency," the laws may go into effect immediately.

BFA will fight these or any other local gun control laws that violate Ohio's critical preemption law. But in the meantime, Columbus appears to be moving ahead to pass these laws.

We will continue to keep you informed as this matter unfolds.

Yours for Liberty,

Dean Rieck
