Arizona Legislature Adjourns

Image
This weekend, the 55th Arizona legislature, second regular session adjourned "sine die." The terms is Latin for "without a day," and means that no further work is scheduled for the body this year. Any bills that were still in progress when the legislature adjourned are now dead. AzCDL bills that suffered this fate are: HB 2166  which would have exempted firearms and firearms safety accessories from state and local transaction privilege (sales) taxes. HB 2316  which would have exempted CCW permit holders from prohibitions against carrying a concealed weapon in most public buildings. HB 2414  which would have removed the requirement for firearms to be unloaded while locked in a vehicle on school grounds. HB 2448  which would have required school districts and charter schools to provide students in grades 6 through 12 with one or more training sessions in firearms safety in an age-appropriate manner. HB 2473  which would have prohibited public entities from enterin

GRNC Alert: “Traitor Thom”

“Traitor Thom” Tillis parses words to create false impressions  Members have recently contacted us regarding the boilerplate message Senator Thom Tillis is sending out in response to constituent contacts opposing the so-called “Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.” As is typical of politicians, his reply carefully parses words to spin gun control included in the act as not gun control at all. Below are relevant excerpts from Tillis’ message to constituents followed by the truth. Tillis claim: “I am proud to have worked in a bipartisan manner to work with my Senate colleagues to develop a commonsense proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country.  Truth:  His “Senate colleagues” were 50 anti-gun Democrats and 14 other RINOs out of 50 Republicans in the Senate. Meanwhile, during negotiations, his “colleague” Sen. John Cornyn, who shared in negotiating the capitulation, got booed off the stage by “colleagues” in his own pa

The other bills we have been tracking remain on the  AzCDL Action Center page . The  Action Center  includes pre-written e-mail messages that you can send to your Senator or Representatives as-is or you may customize them with your own comments.   On the Governor's desk: SB 1177  would require the Department of Public Safety to send a renewal reminder notice and renewal application to holders of concealed weapons permits at least 60 days before the expiration date of a permit. We have prepared an e-mail for you to send to the Governor encouraging him to sign SB 1177. You may send it as-is or customize it with your own comments.   Click here to send an e-mail to the Governor urging him to sig

OFF Alert

06.16.2022 Things are getting crazy, and we are going to need your help. There is just no way around it. Once again, we are seeing a full court press on your gun rights. These assaults are both here in Oregon and nationally. And some of it is just plain weird. US Senator Jeff Merkley has sent out an email that calls for  both  a ban on modern rifles  and  age restrictions on their purchase. He has referred to “ gun caused violence. ” And, after promising a long list of new restrictions on your rights, he called them “only  a first step. ” Every attack on your rights and property for the last 50 years has always been a  “first step.”  No matter how much of our liberty is stolen, it’s never enough. It’s always just the beginning. Always just …the  “first step.” As you know, the most recent efforts to further eliminate your rights are coming from both parties, as the Republicans in Washington are working with the Democrats to craft new gun control from a “framework” they have agreed to.
