Trump cannot run in 2024
Trump cannot run in 2024 (via MoveOn) <moveon-help@list.moveon.org>
Dear MoveOn member,
In 2016, major news networks gave Donald Trump $2 billion in free advertising.1 They haven't learned—and are about to do it again.
As Donald Trump announced he was running for president again, we saw that the news media learned nothing from the last go-round about how to avoid his toxic manipulations. Just like FOX, CNN covered his speech live—essentially giving him free rein to dominate airwaves and reach viewers with his narcissistic brand of conspiracy theories and abuse.
And he doesn't have to pay a dime for all this free advertising.
Donald Trump knows how to manipulate the media into covering his speeches live—giving him valuable free airtime to spew vitriol, lies, and dangerous disinformation. CNN and other news networks need to stop showing his speeches live.
News networks don't need to show his speeches live. They can cover them as news—wait until he's done, show clips within context, offer fact-checking, and stop amplifying his abusive attacks, bigoted insults, QAnon-level conspiracies, and dangerous deceptions. Trump's announcement speech was riddled with lies, which live coverage allowed him to pump directly into people's homes without journalists tethering him to reality.
Trump sought to overturn an election and helped incite a deadly insurrection. We know his words carry weight. You can cover him as news—but don't serve as his personal broadcasting network. Stop covering him live. Fact-check his statements. And don't fall into the trap of giving him free airtime.
Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Donald Trump's preparations for being able to steal the presidency in 2024 are well underway and include working to replace top election officials in battleground states with his own loyalists. Which is why MoveOn is doing something we've never done in our 24-year history: We're launching a powerful, multimillion-dollar effort to defeat Trump-backed secretaries of state across the country and elect individuals who will count every vote and ensure fair elections.

UltraViolet Slams Facebook for Forcing Fact-Checkers Not to Fact-Check Donald Trump, Allowing Users to Post Related Disinformation
WASHINGTON, DC — According to reports of an internal memo leak yesterday from Meta, fact-checkers may not fact-check Donald Trump. While Trump is currently banned from Facebook, the fact-check ban will apply to anything Trump says, including false statements, which can be posted to the platform by other users.
The memo established that if Trump announced a 2024 presidential bid he would no longer be fact-checked on the platform.
Trump has not been allowed to post on his Facebook and Instagram since the days following the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. Meta is considering allowing Trump back on the platform as soon as January 2023.
In response, Bridget Todd, communications director from UltraViolet, a national gender equity group and leading anti-disinformation advocate, issued the following statement:
“Meta forcing fact-checkers to ignore Donald Trump, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and other right-wing extremists’ lies is nothing new. Considering Facebook’s sketchy history of fact checking Donald Trump and other right-wing politicians, or lack thereof, the contents of this memo are hardly a surprise.
“Facebook didn’t deplatform Donald Trump until after he incited a violent and deadly insurrection in 2021. When Trump was on Facebook, he consistently posted lies, many rooted in racist, sexist disinformation, without incident.
“Let’s be clear, Meta is not bending its rules for Trump or right-wing radicals on Facebook — this is business as usual. Meta platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, generate profits from reposts and clicks, regardless of whether they contain valid facts or not.
“Meta needs to hold politicians to the same fact-checking standards as regular users.“
