Proposed 2023 Bill Could Make You a Felon

Pre-filing of legislation for the 2023 New Mexico Legislative Session is now underway, and anti-gun politicians are wasting no time in attacking our rights. HB50 was filed today by Representative Caballero. Under the proposed legislation, owning a magazine that holds 10 or more rounds would make you a felon the moment the law goes into place. The bill even includes a $1.5 million appropriation to "carry out the provisions of the act." We will update you when we know what committees the bill will be assigned to.

Additionally, a bill will be filed on the senate side to ban carrying of firearms within 100 feet of a polling place while voting is underway. The bill has not been assigned a number yet, we will send an update when we have it.

Please make sure you watch for our updates, once the session is underway, bills move very quickly. We also ask that you forward this email to anyone you know who would be impacted by the proposed magazine ban - we need everyone to know what is happening in Santa Fe. Anyone can sign up for our free legislative alerts on our website nmssa.org.
