Michigan Adoption Rules Demonstrates Gun-Grabber Preference for Ignorance over Knowledge

(Photo: Oleg Volk) “William Johnson and his wife, Jill Johnson, of Ontonagon, were asked to be foster parents to their grandchild, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court,” Michigan Live reported in a Sunday update to a story that broke in mid-July. “But William Johnson was surprised when caseworkers asked for the serial numbers for all of his guns and allegedly told him, ‘if you want to care for your grandson you will have to give up some of your constitutional rights.’
“[T]he Johnsons, along with the Second Amendment Foundation and Brian and Naomi Mason, argued … that the policy improperly restricts the constitutional rights of foster parents,” the story elaborates. “The state rule ‘as-applied functionally restricts foster and adoptive parents, and would-be foster and adoptive parents, the rights and privileges of possessing and bearing readily-available firearms for self-defense and defense of family,’ the lawsuit alleges.”
It should be no surprise that such infringements are not limited adoption situations. Divorce can bring its own complications into the mix. “Parents who own guns can have custody of children, but the way the guns are used, stored, and kept could become controversial issues when it comes time to for family courts to decide on custody or visitation issues,” LegalMatch.com notes.
And so-called “safe storage laws” mean no “special circumstances” like adoption or divorce are needed for the state to remove children from the home if their orders aren’t obeyed. And it’s all done under the deceptive “for the children” slogan, even when disabling or putting guns out of reach demonstrably make things more dangerous for all.
That was definitively demonstrated in a now-mostly forgotten incident I referred to as an afterword on an old post on why giving the advantage of even two seconds to violent attackers is self-defeating:
“Dennis Henigan of the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence drops the ball in front of a roomful of reporters, while trying to prove the efficacy of Saf-T-Lok, a purportedly easy-to-use combination lock in the gun’s grip. Henigan fumbles and fails to unlock the gun in a well-lit room with no intruder at the door… Finally disengaging the safety, he apologizes, ‘Most people aren’t as klutzy as I am.'”

“Gun control? It’s the best thing you can do for crooks and gangsters. I want you to have nothing. If I’m a bad guy, I’m always gonna have a gun. Safety locks? You pull the trigger with a lock on, and I’ll pull the trigger. We’ll see who wins.”
Michigan goes quite a bit further than that:
“In its licensing rules for foster parents, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services classifies guns as hazardous materials. As such, guns must be stored securely and out of reach for children. That includes keeping them in a locked place, locking up ammunition separately, locking the trigger and registering the handgun.”
In other words, the “law” requires families submitting to pitchfork murders of children. And forbids young people from saving their own lives and the lives of others from depraved predators…
The gun-grabbers, of course, with no qualifications in defensive gun usage, portray opposition to “lock up your safety” mandates as being for another meme they’ve been able to infuse in the culture thanks to complicit media megaphones: “child gun deaths.” Left unsaid is how many of those occur in urban criminal environments, that is, in “progressive”-ruled areas.
Responsible gun owners know that one size does not fit all, and while there are situations where it makes sense to keep unauthorized hands away from stored guns, the most effective thing a loving, gun-owning parent can do for their children is to give them development-appropriate (notice I did not say “age”) education and training – as opposed to the incompetence-assuring ignorance and avoidance demanded by the antis.
