2024 Session Starting Soon

With Christmas around the corner and 2023 soon coming to a close, the 2024 New Mexico Legislative Session will be here before we know it. Since handing out coal could create carbon emissions, the Grinch in the Roundhouse is settling for attacking our rights again. Earlier this week, the governor announced that she will support a version of Senator Heinrich's rifle ban introduced in New Mexico. The governor cannot sponsor legislation herself, but we expect to see an anti-gun representative or senator introduce the bill and the governor will then add it to her "call" for the 2024 Session. As a reminder, since the 30 day session in 2024 is a "budget session" anything that is not directly related to the budget must be added to the session agenda by the governor.In addition to a semi-automatic rifle ban, we expect to see a polling place gun ban, a bill to make it easier to sue gun manufacturers and retailers, and a bill to make it easier to get a "red-flag" gun confiscation order against someone. We could also see a bill to raise the age to purchase firearms to 21 and a waiting period bill as well. Needless to say, the 30 day session will be a non-stop attack on your rights.Our lawsuit against the governor and her illegal order is still awaiting action at the 10th Circuit after we appealed the judge's decision to not issue an injunction against the ban on carrying a firearm in parks and playgrounds in Bernalillo County. However, in a different lawsuit before a different federal judge in Albuquerque, the judge did issue an injunction against the ban on carrying in parks on December 5th.From all of us at NMSSA, thank you to our members, donors, and supporters for everything you did in 2023. When New Mexicans needed someone to step up and fight in the legislature and in the courts for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms, we did - together. We will have more work to do in 2024, but Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
