Legislative Update:

Legislators to go on summer recess with 26 firearm bills still pending

Dear Friend,

It should surprise no one that there are so many bills dealing with firearms at the Ohio Statehouse. This is true every session.

Currently there are 8 bills we support, including bills to protect the Second Amendment: provide tax breaks for firearms, training, and storage; provide self-defense immunity; and more.

Three of these bills have made progress, including HB 272 to allow concealed carry in government buildings. It has passed the House and is now in the Senate. Then there is SB 58 to prohibit requiring liability insurance, and SB 148 to prohibit tracking retail gun sales, both of which have passed the Senate and are now in the House.

There are also a whopping 16 anti-gun bills we oppose, including all manner of infringements such as a ban on all semi-auto firearms, a gun owner registry, mandated universal background checks, a repeal of permitless carry, a 10-day waiting period for purchases, and so on.

None of these anti-gun bills have advanced further than a sponsor hearing. And we intend to keep it that way.

Now that it's summer, the legislature will go on recess until the Fall. So while we will continue to work on the good bills and block the bad bills, don't expect much of anything to happen until very late in the year. We'll be turning our attention to elections in the coming months.
